Privacy

This is a personal website run by Chris Davies. I try to collect as little as possible. This page explains what is collected, why, and what you can do about it.

Comments

If you leave a comment on a blog post, I store:

  • the name you give
  • your comment
  • the date and time
  • a scrambled (“hashed”) version of your IP address, used only to stop spam. The original IP address is never stored and can’t be worked back out from the hash.

If you react to a comment with an emoji, I store the emoji and the same hashed IP address, so one person can only react once and can undo it. Each click is also briefly logged against the hashed IP address to stop automated abuse, and that log is deleted after about an hour.

Comments are held for moderation and only appear once I approve them. When a new comment arrives I get a notification on Discord containing your name and the comment, so I know there’s something to review.

Comments are stored in a database run by Cloudflare. The form uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check you’re not a bot; it doesn’t use tracking cookies or show puzzles to most people. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Please don’t include personal details in a comment that you wouldn’t want to be public.

Contact form

Messages sent through the contact form are delivered to me by email using Web3Forms. I use your name, email address and message only to reply to you, and delete them when they’re no longer needed.

Analytics

I use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see how many people visit, which pages are popular, and how fast the site loads. It measures page performance in your browser (known as real user monitoring) and sends the results to Cloudflare, along with basic details such as the page visited, referring site, browser, device type and approximate country. It doesn’t use cookies or local storage, doesn’t track you across other sites, and doesn’t build profiles of individual visitors. See Cloudflare’s privacy policy.

Hosting

The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes basic technical information such as IP addresses to deliver pages and protect the site from attack.

Cookies

This site doesn’t set any cookies for visitors. If you switch between light and dark mode, that choice is saved in your own browser so it’s remembered next time.

Why I process this information

Under UK data protection law, my lawful basis is legitimate interests: running a personal website, replying to messages, publishing comments, and keeping spam out.

Your rights

You can ask me to show you, correct or delete anything I hold about you, including any comment you’ve left. Just get in touch through the contact page and tell me which post your comment was on.

If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.
